Employees who were exposed to natural light not only experienced better sleep, but also exhibited higher levels of activity and overall improvement in quality of life (Cheung et al., 2021).Natural light in workspaces has been shown to boost mood, reduce eye strain, and enhance focus and alertness.

Organisations can improve natural light access by placing desks near windows or using glass walls. Where natural light isn’t available, daylight-mimicking artificial lighting can offer similar benefits.

 

Colour and personalisation for engagement

Research shows that different colours can influence workplace outcome. Blue tones, for example, are often linked to calmness and focus, while warmer colours like yellow can spark creativity.

Personalisation makes the workplace feel less generic, boosting morale and motivation. Also, allowing employees to personalise their space with colours or décor that inspire them fosters a sense of belonging and engagement.

Space layouts for collaboration and focus

Open offices are popular for fostering collaboration but can be distracting for focused tasks. A Gensler survey found employees are most productive with access to varied spaces for different work types (Gensler U.S). Workplace Survey, 2020). Balance is key. Hybrid layouts with zones for collaboration and focus let employees choose spaces that fit their tasks, reducing noise- related stress and boosting productive.

Biophilic design to reduce stress and increase creativity

Integrating nature into workspaces reduces stress and boosts creativity. A Human Spaces report found that employees in nature-inspired environments experience 15% higher well-being and 6% higher productivity (Human Spaces, 2021). Adding plants, natural textures, or outdoor views creates a calming atmosphere, enhancing focus and reducing fatigue. Even small touches, like potted plants or nature-themed art, can have a big impact.
